Books:

My current book project treats early modern English travel and news reports of the Ottoman Empire and Persia. Following historian of science Steven Shapin’s A Social History of Truth, I argue that the credibility accorded the details in travel relations depended upon the social standing of the traveler-witness rather than a concern for empiricism or a formal verisimilitude to “facts,” an epistemological construct which did not exist in this period. My project seeks to break this alliance of power and knowledge-production by recovering other forms of Anglo-Islamic writing and insisting upon their inclusion in a newly expanding archive of literary materials.
