Course Writing Requirements

Two Examinations:
           1. Midterm Examination on Fiction, written in class.
           2. Comprehensive Final Examination on the entire course, written at the Final Exam period.

Three brief papers, one each on Fiction, Poetry, and Drama: due in class on the days and dates assigned. The emphasis in each paper will be on how the piece you select "works," rather than on what it "means." You will be writing in detail about what aspects of each piece of writing make that piece particularly effective for you as a reader.

NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED

Every Day:

Turn in a 4x6 note card with these three required pieces of data:
      1. Your name;
      2. The date of the class meeting; and
      3. Either
                 a. your answer to one of the study questions found in the textbook for one of the day's assigned readings;
          or
                 b. your explanation of some one thing you found particularly interesting in one of the day's assigned readings.
These cards are your responsibility. We will use them for several purposes:
      1. To track attendance. Excessive absences (above 3) will result in lowered course grades.
      2. To get a sense of how – and how effectively – you are reading the assignments.
      3. To help us prepare examination materials.
We will return your cards at the end of the semester.
Cards are accepted only on the dates on which they are due.

NO LATE CARDS WILL BE ACCEPTED

Point values for course writing assignments:|

— Two examinations: 20% of total course grade each (40% total)
— Three brief papers: 20% of total course grade each (60% total)
— Daily cards. Required of everyone, and on the days they are due.
