Literary and Cultural Studies focuses on the analysis of texts, including works of fiction, drama, and poetry, as well as the various media of popular culture from a range of theoretical perspectives. Students learn how to use the tools of critical writing to explore the different levels of language and meaning in literary and cultural texts.
Writing, Rhetoric, and Culture focuses on extended practice in writing for many purposes and audiences, including academic, professional, and community contexts. Grounded in the 2,500-year-old tradition of rhetoric, students explore how individuals and groups use writing and rhetoric to act in the world and examine relationships between language, power, identity, and authority.
Creative Writing focuses on producing imaginative writing (poetry, fiction, and non-fiction prose) through interactive workshops that emphasize creative composition and rigorous revision. Students also study published literary works, especially contemporary genres, to expand and refine their literary skills and perceptions.
Film Studies focuses on the history, theory, practice, and language of film and video. Students view and study a variety of films and world cinema from multiple perspectives to develop a better understanding of cinematic language and criticism within cultural contexts.
