Current English Major Requirements

(1999/2000 and after)

Requirements

Graduation with an English major requires 36 total credit hours

  1. Distribution Requirements

    (24 credit hours)
    • English 200, Introduction to English Studies and English 487, Capstone Experience, bring together the elements of the English discipline. All majors must take English 200 (preferably in the sophomore year) and English 487 (preferably in the senior year).
      (6 credit hours)
    • Historical Literature courses cover works in three designated areas: British Literature, Literature before 1800, and American Literature.
      (3 hours in each area; 9 total credit hours)
    • Culture, Ethnicity, and Gender courses introduce literatures of an increasingly diverse English-speaking world plus works in translation within their social, historical, and theoretical contexts.
      (3 credit hours)
    • Literary/Rhetorical Theory courses examine how writing, language, and literature function to shape human culture and individual identity.
      (3 credit hours)
    • Linguistics, Writing, Rhetoric courses deal with principles of argument, language structure, and writing in various communities.
      (3 credit hours)
  2. Level Requirements

    Each student must take at least 15 credit hours of English department courses above 299, at least six of which must be above 399. These courses are included in the distribution and concentration requirements.

  3. Concentration Requirement

    (12 credit hours)

    Students select and explore one of four areas of concentration or design their own with the advice and approval of the English Advising Center and faculty advisor. All concentrations encourage analysis, critical thinking, and introspection and show how texts represent, understand, and share human experience in the context of particular artistic and historical moments.
