Biographical Information

Jane Harvey was born to Elizabeth and Lawrance Harvey in 1776 in Tyneside. Her first publication was A Sentimental Tour, which she published in 1794 under the anonymous name ‘a Young Lady.’ She also published many novels anonymously, mostly in London. Virginia Blain describes these novels as “well-told tales rich in unusual detail” (497). She also wrote children’s verses and tales. Her last publication was Fugitive Pieces, which she published in 1841 and consists of poems about friendship, politics, and more. Harvey was likely related to a woman in charge of a boarding school at Bishopswear named Margaret Harvey.
