British Women Romantic Poets, 1789-1832

An on-line electronic text initiative based in the holdings of the Kohler Collection of British Poetry, housed in the Department of Special Collections at the Shields Library, University of California, Davis.

The goal of the British Women Romantic Poets Project is the design and development of highly accurate and reliable electronic editions of works published by British women poets between 1789 and 1832. The texts are chosen in consultation with an editorial advisory board consisting of scholars in the United States and Canada, and are tagged using Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and encoded using Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) guidelines.

Texts are drawn from the Shields' Library Kohler Collection of English Poetry at the University of California, Davis. The collection consists of some 14,000 volumes by poets, canonical and otherwise, published in Great Britain between 1789 and 1918. About 300 volumes of in this collection are by women poets who were writing during the Romantic period. Most of these volumes are extremely rare and are unavailable in modern editions. The British Women Romantic Poets Project, with the support of the Shields Library, is making these texts freely available for teaching and scholarly use on the Internet.
